Personal Favorites
I spend hours surfing the internet and the following are some of my favorite sites - sometimes for the sites themselves, sometimes for what the site owner is trying to accomplish, and sometimes for the fun treasures I can order. I've broken them into:
Genealogical
- The Genealogue: I go here each morning to remind myself not to take all this genealogy stuff too seriously!
- Deathindexes: We genealogists like our death records and Joe Beine deserves a gold star for keeping on top of countless useful links, all categorized by location. Be sure to check out "Genealogy Links" at the bottom of the page to see some of his other terrific lists.
- Deadfred: How could you not love a site with a name like this? This photobase routinely reunites folks with treasured family photos. Who knows? Maybe one of yours is sitting there waiting for you!
- Genealogyguys: Get your weekly dose of genealogy through this podcast by George G. Morgan and Drew Smith.
- FindAGrave: Just like the title says, a great site for locating grave sites of the famous and obscure around the U.S.
- SoldierQuest: If you’re looking for records of any pre-WWI military ancestors, you’ll want to use the services of Michael Murphy. He once turned up a pension file for me that historians had missed for 150 years!
- WarLetters: Andrew Carroll's worthy Legacy Project to protect and preserve war letters from conflicts around the globe.
- StoryCorps: Go interview Grandma before it's too late!
Non-Genealogical
- NaNoWriMo: Get inspired to finally write that novel by joining others at the National Novel Writing Month site - and block next November off on your calendar!
- BookCrossing: As an author, I guess I shouldn't support efforts to release books into the wild, but as a bookaholic, I can't help myself!
- Monday9am: Short thought-provoking films released each Monday morning.
